Lighting Part 2

This week we redid the lighting assignment. I think it's better than my first attempt at the assignment.

Perspective Redo

This week I redid the perspective assignment. I used the same process as last time. However, this time I used a screenshot from my round 3 RPP game.

Composition Redo

This week I redid the composition assignment. I was watching the Firewatch GDC talks and got inspired. It's not the same style since I don't have the same level of detail seen in some of the darker layers of the Firewatch image. I originally wanted to include Side 2 from Gundam in the image. It would be coming in from the left side of the image and would include the lighting detail like the tower. However, I just couldn't get it to look right. Instead I added a lone car entering from the right of the image as if the buildings are leading the eye towards it.

Silhouettes Part 2

This week I redid the Silhouette assignment. I wanted to try doing a GM Command this time with different weapons but I couldn't get the angles right from the line art unlike the Scopedog from the first assignment. So I did a bunch of weapons. Unlike the first assignment I didn't stick with modifying from the same base object because many of the Silhouettes I saw from the first assignment weren't based off of the same object.

Mannequin Redo

This week I redid the mannequin using the original image from the first assignment. It went better than the first time. I used the value process to make it.

Final Illustration 1

This week we did final Illustrations which should include three concepts we examined this semester and be based off of an artist we referenced.

I used lighting, composition, and perspective. I was thinking of Frank Frezetta while drawing this.

Art of Boris Vallejo

This week we looked up reference of Boris Vallejo. I like half of his stuff. It's just seems like some of his art has odd detail on the characters compared to the environment.

Basic Lighting

This week I worked on 2D with 3 point lighting. I picked an Alien egg from my desk and used the lights Diana brought in. It was really difficult trying to use the blackish greenish shadow.

Composition 1

When I started this I imagined a sword in a mound of dirt.  Doing nice line work is tuff for me so I tried to keep everything blurry and used gradients to guide the eye in a form of cross composition.

Perspective

This week I worked on three point perspective. The original assignment was to do black and white line work from reference of a building. However, I felt the need to get more used to Photoshop. So I spent time using the different brushes and blend modes. I think of all these images 3Point_A looks nice but I feel like 3Point_D is more accurate.

Art of Frank Frezetta

This week we looked over the art of Frank Frezetta for reference. I found his images to be very imposing. I think this is due to the use of cross composition. However, looking at other artists use of cross composition, such as Brain Froud, some images aren't as imposing. Upon further inspection I believe Frezetta curates what details the viewer notices. The lack of or inclusion of detail invokes the viewers imagination creating a greater reaction.

2D the Art of Drew Struzan

This week I gathered reference from Drew Struzan. I like that presence that each character has in his work.

2D Value

This was an interesting assignment. I liked the structure provided from the Dota 2 Art Guide. However, I think I stuck to it too much. When I initially patched my value I was thinking dark to light from bottom to top instead of where my light source would be in the image. I also patched the limbs instead of whole portions of the line work. I think it looks good for some areas but in others there is too great a difference in value.

2D the Art of John Berky

This week I gathered reference from John Berky. I found it interesting that there were so many images of the same space yacht. I wouldn't say different variations but different angles and locations.

2D Week 2 Silhouettes

This week for 2D we needed to take silhouettes of something and make several variations of it. Since I like mech related things I took a silhouette of a Scopedog from Votoms. I still have some shaky hands so I outlined some lineart to make the silhouette of the main body.
The main problem I noticed is from a front facing view it's difficult to convey what item is being added to the silhouette especially when it comes to Votom designs. It seems like all the detail is inside the silhouette. I'm thinking that's either the style of the designs or a byproduct of the animation process since Votoms is an animated series.
